February 7 - I participated in a great meeting on Tuesday with the Gaston Regional Chamber's Economic Development Division and guests at the new Gastonia Conference Center. The guest speaker was Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco. An economic update was shared and the large group of outstanding business people asked lots of questions. There was many comments concerning the states Tier system, the states corp. tax rate and more.

February 4 - Jumped in Gaston County's first ever Penguin Plunge to support marriage. We had lots of jumpers taking the plunge at Robinwood Lake..

January 19 - Spoke tonight at the Gaston Tea Party. The topic of discussion was "abolishing ETJ's"

December  - Parades, friends and family marked a great end to 2011. May God continue to bless us!

November 29 -Had a great time celebrating 32 years of community service at the Bessemer City Area Chamber of Commerce. 32nd Annual Meeting.

November 19 - Attended Hope for the Homeless 2011at the Gastonia Conference Center! A great event that will help empower others!

September 19 - Had a great time tonight with NC Speaker of the House Thom Tillis. We enjoyed great food and conversation at the Alexis Fire Department.

September 12 - Enjoyed a great evening tonight with the Gaston County GOP executive committee. Dr. Michael Beitler was our guest speaker. Dr. Beitler is running for NC Secretary of State. Great speech in the moral argument for Limited Government & Capitalism.

September 10 - Attended the 9/11 Memorial Service at the Gaston County Court House. So thankful for our public safety personnel and the brave men and women of our armed forces. Please remember those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice! Also attended a Fire Advisory board meeting. Thanks to all our Volunteer Fire Departments. Working on issues to make Gaston County safer!!

July & August - Due to storms that swept through Gaston County almost every week, I was unable to keep up with my day to day activities.

As the owner of Treescape, Inc. these two months where some of the worst I have seen since being in business. I can assure you between work and the commission I didn't stop!

June 21 - Attended First Things First Board of Directors meeting

June 20 - Thank you O’Brien family for sharing one of your most prized possessions with America, your son. Thank You Gaston County and others for your outpouring of love, respect and compassion during the procession and memorial service today. Thank you Marine’s for your great expression of honor by the Honor Guard and Funeral Detail and other Marines in attendance. Thanks also to Rep. Sue Myrick, 9th US Congressional District, North Carolina Senator Kathy Harrington, North Carolina Speaker of the House of Representatives Thom Tillis; Rep. John Torbet and Rep. Kelly Hastings, County Commission Chair Donnie Loftis, Commissioner Chad Brown and Dale Burkett, Gastonia City Council all who attended. Thanks also to the many public safety personnel who stood at each intersection along the route from the Charlotte International Airport to First Assembly Church who again graciously opened their doors to the community. If you were not touched by this service today not much will move you.

June 16 - Attended the Gaston Regional Chamber's Heart of Business Awards dinner tonight. Congratulations to all the winners! Our county job market would not be near as strong if it were not for the small businesses. Thank each of you for making Gaston County a great place.

June 11 - What a great honor it was to give the commencement address at my former high school North Gaston. Congrats to all the graduates and many future blessings.

May 31 - Attended a Commissioners budget reteat. I will not vote for any tax increases. I plan to support a balanced budget that prioritizes education and public safety while cutting the size and growth of county government!

May 29 - I have the honor of speaking at Venture Church. It was a time to celebrate those men and women who serve in our armed forces.

May 28 - WOW! What a great event. The competition was tense. I was delighted to win the Nascar all Star Charity Challenge. Rep. Torbett was runner up. ...First Things First of Gaston County will receive a $1000.00. Thanks to all who participated. I also participated in the Donkey basesball game to help support Harper Park in Stanley. All I will tell you is the donkey's and llama's where fast and rowdy!

March 17 - Attended the announcement of REPI S.p.A. They will construct a multi-functional facility to serve its customers in the Americas in the Gastonia Technology Park. The facility will house the divisional corporate office, manufacturing, research & development, customer service and distribution for REPI. Customers in North, South and Central America will be able to have their product needs met with this new plant. The initial investment will be $5.5 million and at full operations the company will employ up to 30 persons. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of March with the completion of the facility to occur by fourth quarter 2011.

March 10 - Gaston County hosted it's largest event as the Crisis Pregnancy Center held the 17th Annual Fundraising banquet. It was an honor to speak to a crowd of over 500 guests about sharing the love of God and the belief that life is sacred and begins with conception. These innocent babies must be protected. National Pro Life Advocate, Jill Stanek was the keynote speaker.

March 9 - Attended the Lanxess Semi-Crystalline Products Compounding Plant ground breaking ceremony at the Gaston Tech Park. A 30 million initial investment / around 75 jobs. Great news for the citizens of Gaston County!

March 8 - Economic Development Commission Meeting

March 5 - WOW what a great time dancing the night away at the Gaston Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Gaston. The Dancing for Future Stars' was a huge success. Thank you to all those who danced and spent time putting this great event together. $72,000 was raised to support the club.

March 5 - Attended the GOP County Convention. The Gaston County Republican Party elected new officers at our county convention. Chosen were Craig Collins as chairman, Brett Keeter as 1st Vice-Chair, LeeAnn MacMillan as 2nd Vice-Chair, Pat Smith as Secretary, and Chad McGowan as Treasurer.  Congratulations to each of these as we begin another election cycle!

February 28 - I had a blast spending time with the Aviator Allstar Cheerleaders. Thank you Keith and Ashley Bagwell for all you do to encourge the youth of Gaston County.

February 26 - Gaston County Republican Party held it's annual Lincoln Day Dinner at Cramer Mountain Country Club. Rep. Thom Tillis, NC Speaker of the House gave the keynote address. It was wonderful to see so many of my friends. Congratulations to Jim Brown, "Appreciation Award" winner, LeeAnn McMillan, "Republican of the Year" and the "Steel Magnolia Award"  went to the late Laura Newmann. It was also an honor to be awarded the "Impact Award" for Elected Officials

February 7 - Great meeting tonight with the Stanley Town Council. We discussed Stanley's participation in the UDO and showed support for our good friend Tug Deason as he continues to work to make Harper Park a reality.

February 4 - Attended the Gaston Regional Chamber's First Friday Focus. The program, "North Carolina Moving Forward". The panel was a collaboration among business, education and policy leaders to produce globally prepared students, teachers and workforce.

February 3 - Attended the Gaston Regional Chamber's Annual Dinner last night. Congratulations to all the award winners and for their contributions to our community. We have a great business group in our county.

January 25 -  Went to Raleigh to meet with our local delegation to discuss issues that affect Gaston County. I also had the honor of attending the swearing in of our local delegation.

January 13 - Attended Annual Planning conference for the board of Commissioners. Very productive and informative. Thanks to staff and the management team for keeping the county in good shape. Had a very productive Mayor's Luncheon, heard great suggestions and a good way to talk about what is important to Gaston County's 14 municipalities.

January 12 - Economic Development Commission Meeting

January 8 - I had the honor of being the Keynote speaker for the Father Accountability Program held at Gaston Correctional Center. The program is designed to help those men nearing their release date from prison become reunited with their children and become more responsible fathers.

2010

December 7 - 31 - Spent the rest of December attending end of the year meetings and taking much needed time with friends and family. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

December 6 - Had a great Commissioners' meeting today. I am pleased to announce I was voted Vice Chair of the Gaston County board of Commissioners. I look forward to serving you in this new role. Also congrats to our new Chairman Donnie Loftis. Last but not least, thank you to out going Chair and Vice Chair Mickey Price and Alan Fraley for the leadership they have provided for the citizens of Gaston County.

November 5 - 15 - Had a great family vacation. Rebecca and I took the kids to Walt Disney World. We had a blast. The kids enjoyed Splash Mountain the most.

Novemember 2 - Election Day! Thank you to the Citizens of Gaston County for allowing me to serve you. It is an honor to win this election. I look forward to working with you.

October 8 - The Gaston Regional Chamber's First Friday Focus was held at American & Efrid. The topic for the morning was " Issues Facing Gaston County " Commissioners Loftis, Torbett and I answered questions and discussed major issues affecting Gaston County.

October 6 - Attended a question and answer session for the Gaston Association of Realtors. A wonderful event. Thank You for the opportunity to speak at your monthly meeting.

October 4 - Had a wonderful meeting today with the leaders of Wake up Church. Wake Up Church is a movement of Christians concerned about the direction that America has taken. Our society has turned from God and has gone its own way, leaving God behind. We are a movement that crosses
denominational barriers, a group of people from all walks of life. We are saying that it is time to recognize our Christian heritage, rekindle
our love for America and the Constitution of the United States.

August 30 - Attended the Gaston County Small Business Issues Forum. The Gaston County Economic Development Commission (EDC) hosted North Carolina Lt. Governor Walter Dalton and NC State Commissioner for Small Business, Scott Daugherty.

August 29 - WOW great service at Venture it's first service at North Gaston High School. Pastor Austin Rammell has a heart for our community.

August 28 - It was an honor to be part of the host committee to help raise much needed funds for Senator Richard Burr. Great fund raiser and BBQ held at Senator Forrester's home in Stanley NC.

August 13 - It was an honor to speak at Leadership Gaston about leadership and community involvement. Formed in 1979, Leadership Gaston is a program to develop the leaders of tomorrow. Since its inception, the program's intent has been developing and enhancing volunteer community leadership. The program has brought together people of diverse backgrounds and experience who have demonstrated leadership potential and offers the participants a unique opportunity to increase their knowledge of Gaston County while building a community network of contacts.

July 22 - Attended County Commission meeting tonight. Two big issues passed: 1) Opposed the federal govt., forcing county's to have collective bargaining agreements. 2) Opposed NC Speaker Hackney limiting prayer by guest clergy in the NC House of Representatives and sent him a copy.

July 19 - Today I had the honor of becoming the 2010-2011 Chairman of the board  for First Things First of Gaston County. First Things First of Gaston County (FTFGC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening marriages and families through education, collaboration with like-minded organizations, and mobilization of members of our community. www.firstthingsgaston.org

July 17 - Attended a benefit for the Reverend Jim Painter. I presented a Certificate of Appreciation from the Gaston County Board of Commissioners for his compassion, devotion and care of the people in the Gaston Community.

July 15 - I spoke at the Nation Baseball Eastern National Championships Opening Ceremony being held at Martha Rivers Park in Gaston County. Over 30 teams from across the region came to Gaston County to play baseball.

July 14 - Hundreds of people took part in a brief candlelight vigil on the lawn of the Dallas Police Department. The event was in memory of  Tracy Hedgepath and her children.

July 4 - Had a wonderful time at the Freedom Celebration hosted by Linwood Church of God. Many elected officials where in attendance. Great sermon and the food was awesome. Had a blast at the annual Dallas Fireworks. Best fireworks show I have ever seen. It was fun and I cannot wait until next year.

April 29 - Crisis Pregnancy Center held a meeting today in Dallas, at the Senior Citizens Resource Center to discuss bringing a Crisis Pregnancy Center to the Dallas area. It was a great meeting and hopefully soon it will come to pass.

April 27 - Attended a dinner held at the Gaston Gazette where the Best of Gaston winners were announced.  Thank you for voting for me in the Best of Gaston Political Official two years in a row!!!!

March 15 - Had a great meeting today with Brad Rivers, Director of Small Business Center at Gaston College. The Center offers a series of seminars for Small Business owners and current or prospective entrepreneurs at NO CHARGE. The seminars cover Marketing, Legal Issues, Business Planning, Recordkeeping, Tax Issues, Insurance Issues and Basic Accounting. Also, they have included a class on Grant Writing for Non-Profits. February 5 - I had the honor of speaking at First Friday Focus hosted by the Gaston Regional Chamber. I spoke on behalf of the Board of Commissioners about some of the small business initiatives we are working on. The main topic being the new small business grant the board approved.

January 28 - The Montcross Chamber of Commerce celebrated it's Golden Anniversary. Congratulations to these businesses who have been faithful employers and leaders in our community.

January 21 - The business community was front and center tonight as they highlighted 2009 accomplishments by 2009 Chair Fred Jackson, recognized award recipients, introduced a new CEO, heard from the Secretary of Commerce J. Keith Crisco, and charted a course for 2010 with a new chair, Regina Moody. It was a great evening!

January 21 - Attended Gaston GOP Women's Day Club & heard Dr. Ancil Overby speak on saving our unborn. This Pro-life supporter appreciates his hard work.

January 15 - Attended Partnership for Children of Lincoln & Gaston Counties board meeting.

January 14 - Under its investment grant program, Gaston County already offers substantial tax breaks for new or expanding businesses that make investments of at least $1 million. Even higher tax breaks are granted for companies that exceed the $15 million and $50 million thresholds. But small and existing businesses that are unlikely to ever spend that kind of money have not had the same opportunities. Tonight the Board of Commissioners voted to give ALL businesses in Gaston County that create net new property taxes in 2010 a 50% rebate. It was a pleasure to sponsor this resolution. I believe our small businesses will benefit from this program and help put some of our citizens back to work during these tough economic times. Hopefully during budget time we can cut our over all tax rate for the benefit of our citizens as well.

January 11 - Attended a poverty simulator put together by three local agencies Gaston Together, the Commission on the Family, and Keeping Families Intact. The goal was to spread sensitivity to the challenges so many impoverished families face, and inspire new ideas about what can be done to make things easier for people in those situations.

January 7 - Attended the regional tea party forum held in Kings Mountain, NC. Con. Patrick McHenry was the keynote speaker. Tea Party members came from South Carolina, Mecklenburg, Gaston, Cleveland and Rutherford Counties. Officials present included Rep. Pearl Burris-Floyd, Rep. Tim Moore, Gaston County Commissioner Tracy Philbeck, Gaston County GOP Chair Cliff Priest, Cleveland County GOP Chair Wes Wesmoreland, Gaston Tea Party Chair Carol Anne Weaver and Mecklenburg Tea Party Chair Matthew Ridenhour.

January 7 - Had a wonderful time at the Mayors' Forum breakfast hosted by the Montcross Area Chamber. Mayors from six towns in eastern Gaston County (Stanley, Mount Holly, McAdenville, Lowell, Cramerton and Belmont spoke and answered questions concerning their towns. Breakfast was great, if you get a chance visit the City Cafe in Mount Holly.

March 7 -   Attended the GOP County Convention. The Gaston County Republican Party elected new officers at our county convention. Chosen were Cliff Priest as chairman, Anne Huggins as 1st Vice-Chair, LeeAnn MacMillan as 2nd Vice-Chair, Pat Smith as Secretary, and John Dorothy as Treasurer.  Congratulations to each of these as we begin another election cycle!

March 12 - Board of Commissioners Work Session.

March 15 - Attended a local church with Senator Forrester and his wife to discuss the Defense of Marriage Act.

March 16 - Attended the Gaston County Board of Education meeting. I had the pleasure of honoring a grand lady who dedicated her life to children not only in Gaston County, but also in this state. Mrs. Grace Elledge, from Dallas, NC is a 101 years young. She served as a Senior English teacher at the old Dallas High School and her late husband, Mr. Charles Elledge, was the principal of the high school. After Mr. and Mrs. Elledge retired, Mr. Elledge played Santa Claus to the children of Gaston County.

March 17 - Toured the new Crisis Pregnancy Center complex, The Place of Refuge. I had a lunch meeting with Dr. Ancil Overby, III and Maheshia Edwards. Thank you Crisis Pregnancy Center for protecting the lives of the unborn.

March17 - Attended Gaston County Young Republican meeting at the Union Road Church of God.

March 19 - Guest speaker at the GCRW lunch meeting held at the City Club. I spoke about my experience as a new Commissioner and answered questions from the audience. GCRW ROCK!!!!

March 19 - Traveled to Morganton, NC to tour the Catawba Meadows park with Travel & Tourism of Gaston County.

March 20 - Attended Partnership for Children of Lincoln & Gaston Counties board meeting.

March 21 - Attended the Gaston County Republican Party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner. It was a fun filled evening of food and fellowship. The keynote speaker was the Honorable Pat McCrory, Mayor of Charlotte NC.

March 23 - Attended Regional Quasi-judicial Training at the Gaston County Citizen Resources Center. Sponsored by Centralina Council of Governments.

March 26 - Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting. I worked to protect property rights by making  sure the following language was in the Thread Trail Master Plan for Gaston County. " property and easements, including abandoned railway lines, will only be acquired from willing property owners and no condemnation will be used".

March 30 - Board of Commissioners Closed Session.

March 31 - I met with Keith Moon Director of Human Services. I also was able to meet with staff and tour the facilities. Great meeting! I learned a lot about all the different roles Human Services perform.

April 3-10 - Went on a long awaited vacation with the family. We had lots of fun and the kids were glad to have daddy all to themselves for a week.

April 13 - Met with representatives from the collective Municipal jurisdictions to begin Discussions/Negotiations relative to the Interlocal Agreements covering the distribution of Sales and UseTaxes.

April 16 - This morning in Raleigh I met our Legislative Delegation, members of the Commerce Department, Transportation Department and individuals who are interested in restoring the Piedmont and Northern Railway System.  This restoration could be a provider for companies to locate along this corridor, which could bring severely needed jobs to our county.  The case was made to Senator Hoyle and Senator Jenkins, of Edgecombe County, that the over 15% unemployment in Gaston County is a dire situation and they agreed. It was my feeling that this meeting was very productive and it appears the appropriate support from the state will be forthcoming sooner rather than later.

May 15 - Attended the Hope Circle Gala at Stowe Manor in Belmont NC. The event was held to raise funds for abused and exploited children. The Children's Advocacy Center of Gaston County/Hope Circle does a great job of helping children. Mark Lunsford gave a moving speech about his daughter Jessica Lunsford and the need to protect our children from predators. It was also an honor to receive The Hope Circle Award of Appreciation.

May 19 - Had dinner at the City Club with the Board of Directors for Caromont Hospital.

May 21 - Attended a lunch meeting with the GCRW club. The guest speaker was John Hood from the John Locke Foundation. Mr. Hood spoke about the abuse of power in government, the waste in government and the corruption in government. It was an informative speech and I hope to apply what I learned to help the citizens of Gaston County.

May 31 - Attended the Dallas VFD Station Dedication. The Fire Station will be a great asset for the Town of Dallas for years to come. Congratulations to Fire Chief Steven Lambert and all of our Firefighters.

June 2 - Economic Development Division Meeting

June 7 - I attended the 621st Engineer Detachment's deployment ceremony. These brave young men and women are worthy of honor for the sacrifice they make for our country. May our thoughts and prayers be with them all!

July 14 - I toured the Catawba County Regional EcoComplex and Resource Recovery Facility. It was a great learning experience. I hope to use this knowledge to help Gaston County make better use of it's landfill and spur economic growth by helping eco-friendly companies locate near the landfill. It is amazing what products can be made with the trash we throw away.

July 14 - Economic Development Commission Meeting

July 20 - Went to Washington, DC to discuss the need for jobs in Gaston County and several projects the County is currently pursuing. I believe the trip was productive and will bring attention to Gaston County from the federal level. Today I had a briefing meeting with Leslie Mozingo with the Ferguson Group. The last meeting of the day was with Michael Blake, Deputy Associate Director, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement at the Executive Office of the President.

July 21 - Today was a busy day filled with lots of meetings in DC. At 10:00 AM I met with Libby Jones, Congressional Affairs Specialist and Brian Borlak, Director of Public Affairs Office of the Assistant Secretary - EDA at the U.S. Department of Commerce.  At 11:00 AM I met with Gay Gilbert, Administrator Office of Workforce Investment at the U.S. Department of Labor.  At 12:00 PM I met with Sky Gallegos, Deputy Assistant Secretary Intergovernmental and External Affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy. At 1:00 PM I met with Representative Sue Myrick at the Cannon House Office Building. At 2:00 PM I met Chris Wall, Director of Economic Development Office of Senator Richard Burr. At 3:45 PM I met with Senator Kay Hagan at the Senate Office Building. The last meeting of the day was at 4:30 with Dana Gresham, Assistant Secretary for Governmental Affairs Office of the Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Again these meetings were productive and with the jobless rate around 15% our focus was on job creation and assistance for Projects that will help put people to work.

August 11 - I had the pleasure of speaking at the Sons of Confederate Veterans annual meeting. I spoke about the need for individuals to vote in order for their voices to be heard. I also spoke about the need to honor all Veterans. It was a great meeting and I learned a great deal about the heritage and honor of the Sons of Confederate Veterans

August 13 - Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting. Tonight I voted in favor of moving forward with Phase three of County wide water and sewer. I believe this vote will help in the development of an energy park and industrial park in Dallas NC. It will also lessen the insurance premiums citizens pay with fire hydrants being accessible. Last but not least this vote I believe will create jobs and development

August 16 - Today I had the the honor of presenting a letter of appreciation to Harvest Time Church in Mt. Holly, NC on behalf of the Board of Commissioners. Harvest Time Church currently feeds, clothes, provides help with medical info. as well as financial needs to over seventy families weekly. Thank You Harvest Time for being a light to our community

October 27 - Had a great Town Hall in Dallas with Mayor Rick Coleman. Although we had lots of rain, we had a good turn out. A great opportunity to discuss important issues that we face as a Town and County.

November 2 - Attended the " Take America Back Rally" in Kings Mountain held at Family Worship center. It was a great event and keynote speaker Harry R. Jackson Jr. was wonderful.

November 9 - Attended the Gaston County Commission on the Family Inaugural meeting. The purpose of this coalition is to facilitate collaborative efforts and form partnerships in Gaston County to provide support to families in need in the most efficient and effective manner. The ultimate goal is to engage families and services in community problem solving one neighborhood at a time.

November 9 - The Gaston County Homebuilders Association held its Annual Meeting of the Membership tonight at Hillbilly's BBQ. It was a great time of food and fellowship.

December 1 - The Gaston Regional Chamber's Annual Economic Forecast Luncheon was somber to say the least. Mark Vitner Managing Director & Senior Economist for the Wachovia Corporation, A wells Fargo Company gave the update. In a nutshell lower taxes and less government regulation is what we need. However, we are not moving in that direction. Government cannot keep it's hand out of the private sector.

December 1 - Tonight was a special evening honoring a local hometown hero. Mr. Earl Withers, he was presented The Order of the Long Leaf Pine at the Dallas Fire Department. This honor is among the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor of North Carolina.

December 3 - Had a great evening with the ladies from the Gaston County Extension & Community Association. They prepare a dinner every year for the Commissioners and we each get a cake. I enjoyed the many crafts they make and the food was great.

December 4 - Had the honor of hosting the Family Service, Inc. 2009 Holiday Celebration and fundraiser. It was a great cause for the children of Gaston County.

December 11 - Attended the Gaston YR's annual Christmas Dinner. Lot's of fun.

December 14 - A great time of food fellowship at the Dallas Museum. A must see for Gaston County residents.

December 14 - I had the honor of watching several volunteer firemen receive their certification and set in on the annual meeting of the Spencer Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.

December 15 - January 3 - Took much needed time off to spend time with family and friends. With a four year old

and six year old I have become a master on the games at Chuckie Cheese. My wife and I have enjoyed several dates which were the higlight of my days off. I look forward to serving Gaston County in 2010 and believe our best days are ahead.
